LEGACY GIVING

You can continue the fight for dignity and justice for future generations by including
Make the Road New York in your estate planning and join our Caminante Legacy Circle.

Why make a legacy gift to Make the Road NY?

In 1997, Make the Road by Walking was founded by local residents and law students, and operated out of St. Barbara’s rectory in Brooklyn, to build community power, combat illegal disruptions of public benefits, and to increase language access.

In 2007, Make the Road by Walking merged with the Latin American Integration Center, founded in Queens in 1992 by a group of Colombian women to promote human rights and democratic participation of Latin American immigrants in NY.

From these two powerhouse organizations, Make the Road New York was born.

Make the Road NY has grown from hundreds of members in one borough to more than 25,000 members across downstate NY, whose collective action has benefitted immigrant and working-class communities in New York and beyond. Our members have won significant victories, including paid sick days requirements and the strongest anti-wage theft law in the country, establishing the Bushwick School for Social Justice, and winning healthcare access for trans and gender non-conforming New Yorkers.

While we can’t predict what new challenges our communities will face in the coming years, we are certain that the fight for economic, racial, and social justice must be led by those most impacted. We also know that Make the Road NY’s integrated model of service provision, transformative education, and community power-building will be necessary to empower the most vulnerable, excluded, and invisible New Yorkers.

By remembering Make the Road New York in your estate plan, you will help to ensure that we remain a trusted organization deeply rooted in the community and that future members will have the resources necessary to organize and fight for policies that value the inherent dignity of every individual.

Caminante, no hay camino. Se hace camino al andar.
Searcher, there is no road. We make the road by walking.

ANTONIO MACHADO

Make the Road New York’s name originated from a poem by Spanish poet Antonia Machado. It seems only fitting that our Legacy Circle name is derived from this as well and that those who are helping us make the road for the future are recognized as fellow Caminantes.

Join the Caminante Legacy Circle and be remembered for – and continue – your commitment to social justice.

When you make your legacy gift, you will join a community of allies who share your dedication to dignity, justice, and community building, and are an inspiration to others! You will also receive:
