🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈As we celebrate Pride this weekend, let’s reflect on this…

  • Mateo Guerrero-Tabares Trans Justice and Leadership Program Manager
  • Bianey Garcia LGBTQ Organizer

SAVE THE DATE: Our 12th Annual #TransLatinxMarch is happening on Saturday, July 15th, at Corona Plaza, Queens.

As we continue to celebrate Pride month, we know that the origins of this movement for Trans and Queer liberation are rooted in resistance.

The first Pride was a protest against police brutality and oppression. Black and brown, Trans, and Queer folks were responding against the routine raids and harassment by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) for existing in public.

We face the same violence and criminalization to this day. Just a few weeks ago, on the eve of Pride, Qween Jean, a prominent Black Trans leader was arrested in Washington Square Park at a protest against anti-trans laws and violence across the US.

Our members have been celebrating Pride by calling on New York City to dismantle the violent VICE units from the NYPD, which have a history of targeting and harassing trans women of color, and by calling on New York State to decriminalize sex work. Check out this powerful video of our members marching at Queens Pride with these demands.

Let us continue to resist and fight against all forms of oppression, including police brutality and systemic racism. And let us uplift and center the voices of those most affected by these issues.

As you celebrate Pride this weekend, we ask you to join us in reflecting on these questions: What am I doing to advance the rights and protections of TGNCIQ+ communities? What is my commitment to the liberation of Trans and Queer communities?

Don’t forget to join us next month on July 15th at Corona Plaza in Queens for our 12th Annual #TransLatinxMarch!

Judy, we have a responsibility to make New York State a safer home for Trans and Queer communities.

In solidarity,
