Last week, Under the rain with pots and pans, dozens of our members, alongside allies, made their voices heard loud and clear in front of Governor Hochul’s Manhattan office, urging for the expansion of health insurance to all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status, in this year’s state budget. 

With the New York State budget’s deadline now extended, our fight to expand health coverage to all immigrants in our State is gaining critical momentum, and the pressure is on for the Governor.

Earlier this week, seven members of Congress, including Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Nydia Velázquez, Grace Meng, Jamaal Bowman, and more, along with 22 local elected officials from across the State, joined State Senator Gustavo Rivera and Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas, lead sponsors of Coverage for All legislation in Albany, in writing to Governor Kathy Hochul, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins, and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to include healthcare coverage for undocumented New Yorkers in the final state budget.

But that’s not all; last week, New York City Mayor Eric Adams also sent a letter to Governor Hochul asking her to include Coverage for All in the finalized budget.

Our member, Enrique Nuñez from Brooklyn, shared last week: “Suffering from Type 2 diabetes, a chronic disease, requires that I carefully monitor my health. Going to the hospital for care is sometimes not an option for me; this is because I am excluded from accessing health insurance because of my immigration status. This is my reality and that of thousands of immigrants in our state. We all deserve health coverage for preventative check-ups, treatments, medicine, and more.”

During our rally yesterday, our members made noise for 2 minutes and 55 seconds to represent the estimated 255,000 uninsured people in our state who are left out of health coverage because of their immigration status.

Gov. Hochul has a golden opportunity to deliver on her promise made last year to immigrant New Yorkers. The time to pass Coverage for All has come, and it is now.
